“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” Hebrews 13:8 (ESV)

Fifty years ago my parents embarked upon a life-long adventure. As newly-weds they left the comforts of their home in New Zealand to be missionaries in Colombia. I’m sure that when they set out by ship they were a little anxious about what was ahead of them, but it didn’t hinder them trusting in the fact that God was directing their steps.

Little did they realise a couple of days into their voyage that their journey would be flipped upside down...for the better! In the wee hours of the morning their ocean liner caught fire bringing with it fear and panic. A verse came to my dad’s mind “The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him, and delivers them” (Psalm 34:7) and brought assurance that God was with them and would deliver them safely to Colombia. (If you’d like to read more about my parents’ journey and life, my dad’s autobiography is titled From Poverty Bay to Riches Untold by Richard Yarrall.)

After the fire was out, the ship’s crew got the ship to port in Fiji. Little did my parents know, they would be put aboard a P&O cruise ship, along with another Kiwi missionary, to go on a cruise down the coast of the Western United States all the way down to Panama, where they eventually caught a plane to Colombia!

With all that is going on in the world these days, it’s a bit like being awakened at 4 in the morning with fire alarms going off. This verse in Hebrews is such a comforting reminder that Jesus, our Saviour, High Priest, and King, will never ever change. All that he requires of me is that I trust in Him.

Prayer: Lord God, help me to trust you with all my heart, and not just my own understanding. In all I do help me to glorify you. (Taken from Proverbs 3:5-6)

Prayer Requests: Pray for the country of South Sudan that is suffering from continued conflict, floods, waterborne diseases, hunger, and now Covid19. Pray for Tearfund as it is the only agency that runs feeding programmes in three of South Sudan’s counties and is raising funds for these programmes.
